Requiescat In Pace: Pope John Paul The Great
The Holy Father has died. John Paul the Great, pray for us.
::DREADMOURNING::
He Faded Serenely
During the nine days of mourning, the Novendiales, DREADNOUGHT will focus on nine remarkable facets of Karol Wojtyla's Papacy:
Day I - Personal Tribute (John Paul the Great)
Day II - The Only Pope We've Ever Known (Youth)
Day III - Sexual Ethics (The Catholic Body and Homosexuality in Focus)
Days IV & V- Politics (Just War and the New World Order; Human Rights, Democracy and Revolution)
Day VI - Life (Abortion/Human Dignity/Contraception/HIV)
Day VII - Life (Suffering/Euthanasia)
Day VIII - Materialisms (Champion of the Poor)
Day IX - Conclave (Looking to the Future)
::The Finest Updated Resources::
Whenever important news breaks I will attempt to include it where appropriate, however I intend to focus more on a sustained reflection on the life, works and legacy of Pope John Paul the Great. Use these resources for up-to-date breaking developments:
CNN's Pope John Paul II site (biography, papacy, farewell, succession)
London Times Pope John Paul II site
The New York Times obituary
The Guardian's Pope John Paul II site
The Washington Post obituary including a fantastic photo presentation
Made Cardinal Archbishop for Krakow by Pope Paul VI, 1967
::In-Depth Resources::
Use these sites for more detailed information on the Holy Father's works, information on what happens now that he has died and the rites and rituals that characterise the days ahead:
EWTN mourning site (pontificate, interregnum, condolences/remembrances, news, q&a, programming, multimedia resources
EWTN site detailing the intricacies of the interregnum (who is in charge, what role do the cardinals play, does the Vatican grind to a halt)
Tribute site of the Archdiocese of Sydney
Vatican minisite celebrating the Holy Father's pontificate
Vatican website containing speeches, travels, encyclicals. letters, books, homilies, etc
PBS summary of Pope John Paul II's Papacy (video, interviews, the Pope's faith, testimonies, sex, biography, role in the fall of communism, etc)
::Looking Forward::
During the mourning period, DREADNOUGHT will continue to operate as normal, aside from the dedicated daily postings. Going forward, I will cover the Conclave and probably engage in the historically foolish task of attempting to predict a potential successor.
I keep thinking and repeating, in between bouts of sudden tears and frantic phone calls from friends and family, that the Pope has gone home. Now, at last, we can ask him to intercede for us before the throne of God.
